Overseas Tour Report

UK Airports – Amsterdam – Tampere was the flight path taken by Padre Nicola Frail, DMS (W), WO1 John McFaul, R IRISH ATU, Sgt Sandy Mac, RLC 256 Fd Hosp, Cpl Michael Kwan, REME 34 Fd Hosp and LCpl Andy Benjamin, 1 Regt RMP representing the Army Table Tennis Team to take part in the European Masters Games in Tampere Finland on 2 – 9 Jul 23. This took place over 2 weeks at various sports venues across Tampere city and the capital Helsinki with over 4,000 athletes from almost 80 countries competing in 29 different sports. It is an International Olympic recognised event, held every 4 years and will be hosted next by Italy in 2027.

The 5 Army Table Tennis players were part of a larger British Army contingent (of around 170 personnel) fielding players across 16 different sports. All team registrations for the EMG23 along with all appropriate clearance, tour branded clothing and significant financial support was kindly co-ordinated, provided and processed by Army Sport (previously Army Sports Control Board). The Table Tennis event was held in the very impressive Tampere Tennis Centre which was a short bus ride from the teams’ accommodation. The Army team were competing in the 30+ and 50+ Master’s age groups for singles and doubles.

The highlights of the team’s achievements were Padre Nicola Frail, DMS(W) winning Gold in the Women’s Open Singles (30+) Event before then teaming up with Sgt Sandy Mac, RLC 256 Fd Hosp to win Silver in the Women’s (30+) Open Doubles.

LCpl Andy Benjamin, 1 Regt RMP won Silver in the Men’s Open (30+) Singles which was an excellent result. Cpl Mike Kwan, REME 34 Fd Hosp reached the quarter finals of the Men’s Open (30+) before teaming up with WO1 John McFaul, R IRISH ATU to claim Silver in the Men’s Open (30+) Doubles after WO1 McFaul won Gold in the Men’s (30+ to 50+) singles Consolation event.

Another highlight was the team getting to meet Dr Herbert Neubauer (now 80 years old) who is a famous table tennis equipment designer and multi age group European Masters Champion across several decades.

The Closing Ceremony (click for video link ATTA feature)  through music and keynote speech from the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) President (the famous Olympic Pole Vault Champion and World record holder) namely, Sergey Bubka, who poignantly summed up the importance of sport and unity between nations in a friendly and happy yet competitive way that clearly confirmed the European Masters Games will be continuing its positive pathway. Next up, Italy 2027 for the British Army Masters!
