The aim was to encourage Table Tennis within the North of the Army, by allowing inspiring grassroot table tennis players to be allowed to play without having to travel hours. The format was a morning coaching session under Rob, followed by a non-seeded group stage, a seeded group stage and then knockout matches. All player ability levels were amazing to see, as it ranged from those wanting to take the sport up for the first time, to players who had intention to progress to a higher level such as Army development.
A total number of 29 participants (Regular, Reserve and FTRS) came to this Event, where it was played in a fierce competitive spirit but with fairness, respect and integrity showed throughout – the true qualities of a sportsperson.
The overall aim is to promote Sport as much as possible, with Table Tennis being a Category 2 Major Sport, it is felt that it is now vital to continue the momentum to ensure maximum participation with the next competition looking at Jul or early 2026. In the famous words by George Orwell "Sport is war minus the shooting" so a relative peace time Army should ensure Sport is a priority to maximise the potential of our Soldiers.
The main lead of this Event would like to send their sincere thanks to all the players who took part on the day, to Rob who coached to help participants improve their abilities, and finally to Catterick (Garrison) Leisure Centre for allowing us the facilities and equipment.
Keep playing and we look forward to seeing you all next year or at another table tennis Event soon.
